Hale concluded his review by stating that, "All of these scenes are played for pathos and humor, and the movie never stops moving. To be sure, it takes a lot of nerve to take a story where many have gone before." David Denby for "The New Yorker" wrote that the film "is also a beautifully silly piece of fluff, as Costner’s character goes from rueful denial to exuberant self-identification to glum acceptance with the help of his daughter’s boyfriend."
